Our History

Allianz Insurance Company had for many years (since the days of Shield Insurance Company) underwritten Jewellers Block insurance. In 1999, Allianz saw the opportunity to increase its share of this niche market. Together with Lireas Holdings (Pty) Limited, the investment arm of Hannover Reinsurance Africa Limited, Gem & Jewel was formed and commenced trading on 1 July 1999.

Allianz announced its withdrawal from the South African insurance market on 8 December 2000. As a result, the business was moved to FedGen from 1 January 2001.

FedGen was taken over by Investec and later sold to Hollard Insurance Company. The latter fronted the risk until business was placed with Compass on 1 January 2004.

We have positioned ourselves as a leader in our field. We are a member of SAUMA (South African Underwriting Managers Association) and have membership with the Jewellery Council of South Africa (JASA).
